Stretchmarks can develop when the skin is stretched rapidly : More accurately, the skin’s second layer (the dermis), becomes torn due to over stretching. The most common areas for stretch marks to develop are the stomach, breasts, thighs and hips. Anyone can suffer from striae (the technical term for stretch marks) and they affect most of the adult population. Fortunately, our health is not affected by them and only affect us cosmetically. Of course, these concerns grow in the warmer seasons as the amount of our bodies we show, increases.

How do stretch marks occur?

Stretch marks develop when the body grows so fast that the skin cannot keep up with it. Stretch marks are generally associated with pregnancy but can develop during puberty: sudden weight gain and even body building can also cause stretch marks.

Although skin is normally very elastic , when it is stretched, the normal production of collagen is disrupted. It is this collagen which helps to make sure the skin stays tight and supple. There are other factors which affect the skins natural ability to produce and maintain collagen levels such as whether or not the person smokes and their diet Collagen levels affect the appearance of wrinkles and lines in the face. They also determine how other blemishes, like surgery scars and acne scars, heal.

What do stretch marks look like?

When initially formed, stretch marks are reddish purple lines. They appear indented and have a different texture to the rest of the skin. after a while, the discoloration does subside, turning lighter and less noticeable. However they very rarely heal on their own.

Removal of stretch marks

Treating stretch marks is possible either at home or by visiting an expert. Stretch mark treatments range enormously in price and effectiveness, treatments range from creams purchased over the counter to expensive surgical procedures for many individuals, stretch marks are ugly and undesirable and often make people feel self concious, but this can be overcome or eliminated by treatment to remove stretch marks.

Creams and oils are the cheapest way to treat stretch marks but, not much of the cream is actually absorbed into the skin therefore, creams are not affective in stretch marks removal. However, using creams with techniques such as micro-needling, results in a much higher percentage of cream absorbed by the skin so this method is the most effective method for most people.
